The Name Game

My real name is Robert Drinkwater but I prefer to be addressed by my tribal name: Shis’ka Bob. It’s the name that world knows me by and it has centuries of tradition and history behind it. I’m proud to carry it on for my nation and for my family.

Unfortunately, it’s also a very common name online, as I’ve been finding out over the past few years. I tried to get a .com domain under the name “shiskabob” but it’s already taken. I visited the website and it appears it’s not actually being used for anything. I’ve tried signing up for email address with Hotmail and Gmail, shiskabob is already taken. I tried signing up for a blog here on WordPress.com and on Tumblr, it’s already taken. I tried signing up for Facebook and Twitter accounts with the shiskabob username and, you guessed it, it’s already taken (this is a recording).

Finally, I signed up here and got the domain under my real name. I couldn’t even just use Drinkwater, that’s already in use, so I had to use my full name. It’s not exactly ideal for me. For one thing, it makes for kind of a long URL, and for another thing I’m much better known by my traditional name, but it’ll do for the time being.

It’s just frustrating that I can’t have shiskabob as my username for anything online, since so many buffleheads out there already use it. Where’s the originality? If I had known it was going to be so popular I would’ve signed up for everything years sooner, but I have to make do with what’s left.

I can tell you this, though: I’m like the Highlander, there can be only one Shis’ka Bob. I’m him and you’re not, even if you have the username shiskabob.
